η′ nucleus optical potential and possible η′ bound states

چکیده
Starting from a recent model of the ηN interaction, we evaluate the η-nucleus optical potential, including the contribution of lowest order in density, tρ/2mη′ , together with the second order terms accounting for η absorption by two nucleons. We also calculate the formation cross section of the η bound states from (π, p) reactions on nuclei. The η-nucleus potential suffers from uncertainties tied to the poorly known ηN interaction, which can be partially constrained by the experimental modulus of the ηN scattering length and/or the recently measured transparency ratios in η nuclear photoproduction. Assuming an attractive interaction and taking the claimed experimental value |aη′N | = 0.1 fm, we obtain a η optical potential in nuclear matter at saturation density of Vη′ = −(8.7 + 1.8i) MeV, not attractive enough to produce η bound states in light nuclei. Larger values of the scattering length give rise to deeper optical potentials, with moderate enough imaginary parts. For a value |aη′N | = 0.3 fm, which can still be considered to lie within the uncertainties of the experimental constraints, the spectra of light and medium nuclei show clear structures associated to η-nuclear bound states and to threshold enhancements in the unbound region. The self-energy of an η in a nuclear medium is calculated in a chiral unitary model, and applied to η states in nuclei. Our calculation predicts an attractive η nucleus optical potential which can accommodate many η bound states in different nuclei.
متن کاملDependence of calculated binding energies and widths of η-mesic nuclei on treatment of subthreshold η-nucleon interaction
We demonstrate that the binding energies ǫη and widths Γη of η-mesic nuclei depend strongly on subthreshold η-nucleon interaction. This strong dependence is made evident from comparing three different η-nucleus optical potentials: (1) a microscopic optical potential taking into account the full effects of off-shell ηN interaction; (2) a factorization approximation to the microscopic optical pot...
متن کاملFormation of η-mesic Nuclei Using the Recoilless (d,He) Reaction
We propose to use the recoilless (d,3He) reaction to produce η-mesic nuclei. This reaction has been used to observe deeply bound pionic states and proven to be powerful recently. We calculate η-mesic bound states in the nucleus using an optical potential and their formation cross section with the Green function method. Then, we carefully check the experimental feasibility. We find that η-mesic ...

Measurements of the pion, kaon and eta meson masses and their interactions in finite nuclei provide new constraints on our understanding of dynamical symmetry breaking in low energy QCD [1]. New experiments at the GSI will employ the recoilless (d, He) reaction to study the possible formation of η meson bound states inside the nucleus [2], following on from the successful studies of pionic atom...
متن کاملStatus of experimental investigations of η-mesic nuclei
Short history of ideas concerning a possible existence of bound states of the η-meson and a nucleus is considered. First experiments at BNL and LAMPF on searching for these states are discussed. Another recent experiment using the photon beam of the 1 GeV electron synchrotron of LPI is described. Possible experiments on studying η-mesic nuclei using a proton beam (at Nuclotron of Dubna) and a γ...
